The curriculum is divided into two primary paths with distinct focuses: Chemical Engineering emphasizes unit operations (fluid dynamics, heat transfer, separations), thermodynamics, and reactor design with applications in petroleum refining, pharmaceuticals, and microelectronics. Biological Engineering focuses on biology, microbiology, biochemistry, biotransport, and bioprocessing with applications in biofuel production, medical device design, and biomedicine.
The Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering and Biological Engineering programs are offered through the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering at Montana State University. Duration: 4 years (8 semesters). Mode of Delivery: On-campus, Full-time. Next major intake is August 2026 (Fall).
Credits Required: A minimum of 122 credits is required for graduation. Duration: Typically 4 years (48 months) for a single major. Dual Degree Options: Students can pursue a dual major in both Chemical and Biological Engineering, which usually takes 4.5 years, or a dual degree (two separate B.S. degrees), which typically requires 5 years. Performance Requirement: Students must achieve a grade of C- or better in all classes used to satisfy degree requirements.
