The Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Montana is designed to prepare students with a strong foundation in the principles of mechanical engineering. The program emphasizes hands-on learning and practical applications in various engineering disciplines, preparing graduates for careers in manufacturing, research and development, design, and more.
The University of Montana (UM) in Missoula offers a unique Mechanical Engineering pathway via a Pre-Engineering Program. In this 2+2 arrangement, students complete their first two years at UM and then transfer to Montana Technological University (Montana Tech) in Butte to finish the Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree
The curriculum is designed to span four years (minimum 136 credits at Montana Tech). Years 1–2 (UM Missoula): Focuses on core math and science, including Calculus I & II, Physics I & II, Introduction to Engineering, and General Education requirements. Years 3–4 (Montana Tech): Focuses on advanced engineering topics such as Applied Thermodynamics, Fluid Mechanics, Mechanical Vibrations, and a two-semester Capstone Engineering Design project
