How we help
- Choose the right type: university halls, student residences, private rentals, homestays or, in India, hostels and PGs.
- Compare the full cost: rent, deposit, bills, meals and contract length, for the months you actually need.
- Check before you pay: a Vidysea higher studies counsellor reviews the provider, the contract and how you're asked to pay, usually within 72 hours.
- Plan your move-in: payment and arrival dates, lined up with your fees and visa.
If something looks wrong, we'll tell you, even when the listing comes from a well-known provider. You choose and book directly with the provider; we help you make a safe, informed choice. Housing guidance is part of paid Vidysea plans.
Which type of student housing abroad suits you?
Student housing abroad falls into two groups: on campus and off campus. On-campus housing is easier to arrange from India; off-campus housing is often cheaper but needs more checks.
On campus
- University halls: rooms owned and run by your university, often with shared kitchens and bills included. Many first-year students live here, and it's an easy way to make friends.
- Private halls on campus: run by a private company in partnership with the university, often with more en-suite rooms and higher rents. You usually book directly with the company.
Off campus
- Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA): private student residences with furnished rooms, bills included and staff on site. Contracts are often longer than university halls.
- Homestay: a room in a local family's home, often with meals. A good choice if you want more support and home-cooked meals in your first months.
- Private rental: a room in a shared house or flat, rented from a landlord or agent. Usually cheaper, but you manage bills, flatmates and the tenancy yourself.
- Hostel or short stay: temporary rooms for your first few weeks while you search for something long-term.
In India: college hostels, PGs (paying-guest rooms, often with meals) and co-living spaces are the main options, alongside shared flats. Hostel places at many colleges are limited, so apply as soon as you confirm your seat.
Where to find student accommodation: how to find accommodation abroad
Here's how to find accommodation abroad, in the order most students should try, from safest to riskiest:
- 1Your university's housing office. It lists university halls and partner residences, and often runs an off-campus housing portal with checked landlords. This is the safest place to start.
- 2Purpose-built student accommodation providers. Book directly on their official websites, not through social media posts.
- 3Listing websites and apps. Use the well-known national platforms for shared rooms and private rentals, and avoid paying anyone outside the platform.
- 4Student groups. University and Indian student societies share rooms, flatmate requests and honest reviews of landlords, but check every offer as carefully as you would any other listing.
Applying for university halls: apply as soon as your offer arrives, even if it's conditional. Halls often fill early, ask for a deposit to hold your room and may give priority to first-year and international students. Start your search 4 to 6 months before your course begins, and aim to have housing confirmed before you book flights.
What student housing costs by country
Prices change every year and vary by city and room type, so use these as a starting point, then check the exact costs for your university.
| Country | On campus | Off campus | Source and date |
|---|---|---|---|
| UK (London) | University-owned en-suite room: about £226 a week, over 41 weeks | Private student residences: about £341 a week, over 50 weeks; average £13,595 a year | Unipol and HEPI, 2024–25 |
| Australia | AUD 110 to 280 a week | Shared rental: AUD 95 to 215 a week | Study Australia, checked October 2026 |
| USA | Housing and food: $13,900 a year (public); $15,920 (private) | Listed on each university's cost-of-attendance page | College Board, 2025–26 |
| Canada | Example: Toronto Metropolitan University, CAD 8,988 to 15,147 a year, plus meal plan | Two-bedroom flat, national average: CAD 1,550 a month | TMU, 2026–27; CMHC, 2025 |
Student accommodation in the UK: London is the most expensive city, and contracts often run 41 to 50 weeks, so compare yearly totals, not weekly rates. Rooms outside London usually cost less, and many universities guarantee first-year international students a room if they apply by the deadline. Student accommodation in Australia: most students live off campus in shared rentals, and Sydney and Melbourne usually cost the most. Weekly rent is the norm, so multiply by the weeks you need. Read: study in Australia · how much does it cost to study in Australia?
Student accommodation in the USA: many universities expect first-year students to live on campus, often with a meal plan. Read: study in the USA · how much does it cost to study in the USA?
Student accommodation in Canada: residences often charge an acceptance deposit, and city rents vary widely, with Toronto and Vancouver among the highest. Check whether your residence fee includes a meal plan. Read: study in Canada · how much does it cost to study in Canada?
Monthly rent doesn't tell the whole story
- ₹20,000 a month × 12 months = ₹2.40 lakh
- ₹25,000 a month × 9 months = ₹2.25 lakh
The higher rent works out cheaper overall, because the contract is shorter. So compare the total for the months you actually need, not the monthly rate. Before you choose, also add the deposit, any booking fee, and bills such as electricity, heating and internet if they aren't included. Then check how much you must pay before you arrive, because a deposit plus the first rent instalment can be a large single payment. Learn how to pay deposits from India (LRS and TCS).
Deposits, guarantors and contracts
- Deposits: most providers ask for a deposit to hold your room. Some are non-refundable; at the University of Toronto Mississauga, for example, the residence acceptance deposit for 2026–27 is CAD 1,650 and can't be refunded. In England, a landlord must protect a tenancy deposit in a government-approved scheme.
- Guarantors: private landlords, especially in the UK, often ask for a local guarantor. If you don't have one, you may be able to pay several months' rent in advance or use a paid guarantor service. University halls usually don't need one.
- Contracts: check the length, the move-in and move-out dates, what the rent includes, and whether you can leave early or pass the room to someone else.
Read every clause before you sign, and keep a copy. If you're borrowing for your studies, check whether your education loan covers accommodation.
Booking from far away? Watch for these warning signs.
- A price much lower than similar places nearby: genuine rooms near campus rarely sell cheaply.
- Pressure to pay immediately: scammers rush you so you don't check.
- Details that keep changing: the address, price or photos don't match.
- Refusing a live video viewing: a real landlord can show you the room.
- An unusual payment method: gift cards, crypto or personal accounts are hard to trace.
- Asking for money before written terms: always see the contract first.
Notice any of these? Don't pay yet. Send us the listing and we'll check it with you before any money leaves your account.

Student accommodation abroad: FAQs
How do I find student accommodation abroad as an Indian student?
Start with your university's housing office, which lists halls and partner residences. Then look at purpose-built student accommodation providers and well-known listing platforms, and ask university and Indian student groups. Apply for halls as soon as you get your offer, and never pay before you've checked the listing and the contract.
How much does student accommodation in the UK cost?
It depends heavily on the city. In London, the average purpose-built student room cost £13,595 a year in 2024–25, according to Unipol and HEPI. University-owned rooms are often cheaper than private halls. Outside London, rents are usually lower, so compare the yearly total for your city.
How much does student accommodation in Australia cost?
Study Australia puts on-campus housing at about AUD 110 to 280 a week, and shared rentals at about AUD 95 to 215 a week. Sydney and Melbourne tend to cost more than smaller cities. Remember to add bills, transport and a bond, which is usually a few weeks' rent.
How much does student accommodation in the USA cost?
For 2025–26, the College Board puts average on-campus housing and food at $13,900 a year at public four-year universities and $15,920 at private non-profit ones. Off-campus costs vary by city, so check each university's cost-of-attendance page for its own estimate.
How much does student accommodation in Canada cost?
Residence fees vary by university. At Toronto Metropolitan University, for example, residence costs CAD 8,988 to 15,147 a year for 2026–27, plus a meal plan. Off campus, CMHC puts the 2025 national average for a two-bedroom flat at CAD 1,550 a month, often shared.
How do I avoid rental scams when booking from India?
Book through your university, official provider websites or trusted platforms. Ask for a live video viewing, read the written contract before you pay and only use the provider's official payment method. Be wary of prices far below the area average or pressure to pay at once. If in doubt, send us the listing.
Do I need a guarantor or deposit?
Usually you'll need a deposit to hold your room, and some deposits can't be refunded. Private landlords, especially in the UK, often ask for a local guarantor. If you don't have one, you may be able to pay rent in advance or use a paid guarantor service. Check the terms before you sign.
Can I cancel student accommodation?
It depends on your contract. Many university halls and student residences let you cancel if your visa is refused or you don't get a place on your course, usually with proof. Outside those cases, you may lose your deposit or still owe rent. Read the cancellation terms before you pay anything.
When should I start looking for student accommodation abroad?
Start four to six months before your course begins, or as soon as you receive an offer. University halls often fill early, and the best-value rooms near campus go first. Starting early also gives you time to check listings properly and plan your payments.
Is this service only for students going abroad?
No. It's just as useful if you're moving to another city in India. We help you compare college hostels, PGs, co-living spaces and shared flats on cost, location, safety and contract terms, and check deposits and lock-in periods before you pay.
What if I can't find long-term housing before I move?
Book a short stay for your first few weeks and plan for the cost. Then look for long-term housing once you've arrived and can view rooms in person. Check whether your university, bank or visa process needs a local address, and when.
